The fireplace opening is large enough to accommodate the space visually as well as functionally. The massive brick structure becomes a piece of sculpture separating the living space from the library. Note the deciduous trees to the left of the fireplace wall which allows the winter sun to penetrate its mass. Heat is collected and reradiates into the space in the evening.
